I have to admit that learning things slowly for a while can be discouraging. But, if you stick with it long enough your hands create almost unconscious movements that allow you to play it faster than you thought you ever could.

Great advice Chad. This weekend I was working on Earth Wind & Fire's version of "Got to Get You Into My Life". The intro on guitar is a fast lead and I'll be taking your "learn it slow first" approach before I take it up to tempo.

I will also add a product which I've developed called Rock-Tips Liquid Callus Builder for musicians. You brush it on your fingertips, and in a couple of minutes you have a nice hard 'skin' over your fingertips. This will actually help build up your natural calluses faster since you'll be able to play for longer periods at a time. Great stuff - www.Rock-Tips.com

As far as alternatives go, there are a few options. Lilypond gives you the most control over the output than any that follow but lacks a good wysiwyg interface. Here is a short list (and I am sure I am missing some):

	MuseScore
	TuxGuitar
	Rosegarden

Is there anything you can recommend in its stead that would work somewhat like it, in terms of composition? Or is lilypond the only alternative out there?
Thank you for keeping up the blog and starting to implement all these neat changes to it. Looking forward to seeing what you plan on doing with it. Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up. You are correct in that it is Noteflight and not Nightflight. I changed it and always appreciate corrections.

Hey Chad,

Above you mention the website for the guitar composing and such - but it's written up in the post as Nightflight.com? Perhaps it's just a typo, otherwise I'm mistaken thinking it was noteflight, but I wanted to call that to your attention either way.

I'm really happy that you brought this up. I know that every time I leave a lesson, I'm pumped and jazzed up to go home and play for hours, to devote all my awake time to making myself be the best possible guitarist I can be. It's days later that I realize I've forgotten the few scales I learned years back, and my fingers aren't moving as fast as they should if I got into a better habit of practicing daily. I'm printing this post out, alongside a list of those selfsame goals. Thank you.
