Swim Portion Of Triathlon Still The Hardest To Conquer

Today became a test day of sorts because I did not sleep well. I opted to sleep another hour and a half and train later in the morning. I was hoping with a later start to see an improvement in my swim from Monday but that does not seem to be the case.

I know I’m not at full awareness at 6am when I am usually beginning my swim training. My body has not had food and I do not have enough data to know whether it is the best time to do this training. On the other hand, it currently is the best time considering my other work and family obligations. I am sure every new athlete goes through this if they have a family and a career.

I had my usual breakfast smoothie and made sure that it was a good 2.5 hours before I was to step into the pool. The goal today was the same as Monday with 3 x 50 yards with 30 second breaks in between. Followed by a 300, 200, and 100 and a minute break in between each of these. I think I only did one stretch of the pool with a breast stroke for the 300 and 200. I did the 100 completely freestyle. I think this is a small improvement but my breathing was really heavy at the end.

I think I need to experiment with breathing every other stroke throughout instead of every 3 strokes. This will get more oxygen into my lungs throughout the swim. If I am to make the 600 yard swim in May, then I really need to solve this issue. I feel pretty fast though the water when I compare myself to the other lanes. That can be deceptive though considering they are not training for a triathlon.

Beginning later did not seem to have any affect on my performance. I was still at just about the same level as usual considering my past couple of swims. I am also considering adding a little bit of plant based protein powder every other day to my diet. This week is the first week I felt muscle soreness in my lats from swimming. I am positive the longer distance did not allow for full recovery in the two days between each swim. I am considering this powder from 22 Days Nutrition due to its organic and plant based nature.

I’m excited for tomorrow because it will be the first run in my new On Cloudflow shoes! I know it won’t be a miracle shoe. But, it will be a lot better than the 3 or 4 year old runners I am currently sporting!
