I began this journey to run my first triathlon. Like many others, I began with a book that outlined a plan to get my body into the physical shape needed to accomplish this task. Along the way, I discovered that I was unable to reach the swimming goals. This lead to searching out for an answer. And like so many physical activities in life. It boils down to sports techniques.
Sports Techniques Focusing On Swimming
I mentioned earlier that I began to work through the book Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way To Swim Better, Faster, and Easier. The book got me part of the way to where I am currently. YouTube videos will hopefully help me get the rest of the way. It is amazing how the technique can completely change how you use your muscles and therefore increase your endurance.
Next week I will finally attempt to complete a full stroke using the Total Immersion method. It has been really tempting to just take a few laps here and there but I have refrained. If I am to imprint the correct movements to my neurological system, then this would counter that development. I was so excited yesterday about my progress that I almost skipped biking today and went swimming again (but I stayed on my schedule).
Re-Thinking About Running Techniques
This brings me to running. Though I have hit a distance of 6.6 miles, I felt that I really had never learned how to actually run. The last thing I want to do is get injured. If I want to do this for the rest of my lifetime, then a good technique is a must.
Through another source, I was introduced to the Pose Running method by Dr. Nicholas Romanov. I cannot count the times that I have been told that good runners should not land on their heals. No one ever said why or gave a good method to teach how to effortlessly do this. Stumbling onto this method is changing every step I take.
Here is a really awesome video teaching the basics of the method. I encourage you to watch the entire video. It has helped me and after backing off mileage this week (tomorrow is actually a shorter run to focus on technique), I am excited to push for 7 miles next Saturday. It actually gets me really excited just thinking about running next week (did I just write that?).
If you want to do further reading on the method, then I encourage you to get Dr. Romanov’s book The Running Revolution: How to Run Faster, Farther, and Injury-Free for life. It is truly a game changer for longevity.
